Resisting 12-Step Coercion: How to Fight Forced Participation in AA, NA or 12-Step Treatment by Stanton Peele,

Resisting 12-Step Coercion: How to Fight Forced Participation in AA, NA or 12-Step Treatment by Stanton Peele,
A manual for attorneys and their potential clients -- the approximately 1,000,000 Americans coerced annually into Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous, and 12-step "treatment". The book is divided into three sections. The legal section discusses all of the precedent-setting cases on government-coerced AA or NA participation (all have ruled it unconstitutional), discusses the legal strategy used to win those cases, suggests other possible avenues of attack, and suggests legal strategies for those coerced into 12-step programs or 12-step treatment by employers or professional associations. An appendix reproduces all of the precedent-setting cases in toto. The second section demonstrates unequivocally, through its history, literature, and practices, that AA is a religious program -- and, hence, that all other 12-step programs (which are carbon copies of AA) are also religious programs. The third section demonstrates, through a thorough survey of the scientific literature, and AA's own membership statistics, that AA, NA, and 12-step treatment are ineffective as means of combatting alcoholism and other addictions. And a detailed bibliography provides a good jumping-off point for anyone wishing to further research these matters.
